Value Education
Value education in other words can be described as character- or moral education. The educators pass on values to the learners to be implemented in their lives. Value education aims at leading a better and improved life – a life based on values of true humanity and importance of having a good character and attitude towards life.
Value education starts from home, and it continues throughout our lives. But similarly as we learn values in schools and at home, we constantly learn values indirectly in outside world. Therefore proper education plays a major part in implementing right kind of values to our next generations. If Value Education was taught in each and every school, imagine the positive impact it would have on the society!
Areas of Value Education
• Character Development
• Personality Development
• Citizenship Education
• Spiritual Development
All the areas serve the same purpose of implementing beneficial values into our lives. One of the purposes of Value Education is to make us responsible citizens, taking care of our duties in society as taught in the Vedic scriptures of India.
Benefits of Value Education in Students’ Academic Results
• Better cooperation skills (e.g. in asking questions from the teachers)
• Improved sense of responsibility regarding homework
• Increased capacity to work independently
• Improved skills in implementing the learning in practical life
• More attentiveness in the classroom
• Better decision-making skills
• Healthy and balanced mind
• Better relationships and communication skills between the students and the teacher
• Increased capacity to develop one’s own as well as the peers’ behaviour
Common misconceptions around Value Education
• Value Education is not a separate subject to be taught as any other subject. The education in itself holds values, so the process happens through the methods and through the practical application, leading to polite and responsible behaviour.
• Value Education doesn’t expect the students to hit higher marks in exams, its emphasis is on developing a positive and fruitful attitude, which itself will lead to positive results and outcomes.
• Value Education is important not only to the students, but to the teachers as well. Without being an exemplary role model, no teacher can be able to help the students in developing good qualities and refining their behaviours. The change and growth must start from oneself!
What is Value Education in schools offering to children?
• As the children spend most of the day in school, it is a favourable platform for learning multiple positive values of life
• Value Education shapes the future by giving numerous tools for living a right way of life towards a proper purpose
• Value Education teaches how to deal with day-to-day activities and situations
• Value Education has a primary approach on quality learning, leading to better understanding of family – and social values – staying connected with the parents and community is an important value to be understood!
• Value Education helps children to gain self-responsibility for their behaviour and to become internally (self-) motivated
The school is a model of the world, so the goal of Value Education in schools is to nourish the learners with moral values and to build virtues on which their actions will be based on. This will reflect in their behaviour and through that to the whole society. Therefore, by educating the children with Value Education, you are creating a better world for next generations to live in.

Parenting
Parenting has three essential components. Firstly, a component of care that protects the children from harm. Care also encompasses promoting emotional- as well as physical health. Secondly, a component of control, which involves setting and enforcing boundaries to ensure children’s and others’ safety, in ever widening areas of activities. Thirdly, a component of development, which involves optimising children’s potential and maximising the opportunities for using it.
ISKCON Rishikesh offers sessions on Parenting once in every three months. Session topics cover areas such as: ‘Art of Parenting* and ‘Five Types of Parents*. To know more about our Parenting programs, please contact +91-8793330148.

Kirtan Programs
Benefits of Kirtan
Kirtan is a dynamic musical experience, also known as congregational chanting of the sacred mantras. In the Bhakti Yoga tradition, sound is used as a powerful tool for inner transformation. Kirtan is a simple and authentic way to relieve stress, refresh the mind and connect with the heart. Both new meditators as well as seasoned practitioners will find the benefits in the practice, as it is explained to be the most effective method for spiritual advancement in the modern age.
Kirtan is one of ISKCON Rishikesh’s most popular programs – offering an opportunity to experience the power of collective devotion as well as creating space for deeper connection, within ourselves and with others.
During the kirtan programs we hear and chant the mantras and engage ourselves fully in the practice, clapping our hands and occasionally rising up to dance too. It is a very wholesome and healing experience, and we warmly welcome you to join.

Cow Protection
Many wonder why the Vedic and Vaishnava cultures especially stress protection of the cow. The philosophical reason is simple: The cow is considered as one of our mothers, as she gives us her milk and thus nurtures our health and wellbeing. Just as no civilized person would injure or kill their mother, the Vedas teach that to take milk from the cow and then kill her is the same as killing one’s mother. Similarly, the bull is considered like the father because the bull traditionally helps in the tilling of the fields, and thus is to be respected.
ISKCON has numerous farms around the world, and in them no cow, bull or calf is slaughtered. We look at innovative ways to work with the bull and engage their God-given strength in the service of others, under humane and loving conditions. Regardless of milk production, cows and bulls also produce dung and urine which is valuable as fertilizer, compost, some medicines, cleaning products and biogas fuel. In the ISKCON farms they are sheltered in barns (goshala), wherein they are fed with healthy stapple and are taken care of.
We believe protecting cows is a most important component of protecting the earth. According to the ancient Vedic texts the cow is the representative of Mother Earth. And, when the cow and the bull are mistreated, Mother Earth withdraws her bounty.
